BOSTON CONGRESIONAL INTERNSHIP
Interns play an integral role in our office operations and contribute greatly to the Senator’s work on behalf of the Commonwealth and constituents. Our goal is to provide all interns with a meaningful professional experience that will enhance their understanding of government and public service.
Senator Markey’s Boston Office is currently accepting applications for the spring 2025 internship program. Applications are due by Monday, November 18, 2025 at 11:59PM EST.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Preference is given to applicants that apply early.
Spring session: Jan 15, 2025 to May 9, 2025
Qualifications: Our internship program is geared towards current undergraduate, recent undergraduate, graduate, and associate’s degree. Ideal applicants are highly motivated individuals who possess strong writing, research and interpersonal skills, and are adaptable to new or fluid environments. Background in political science, international relations, environmental studies, liberal arts, and communications are desirable, but students of all fields of study are welcome to apply.
Candidates from BIPOC, LGBT+, working class, and/or other underrepresented communities with Massachusetts ties are strongly encouraged to apply.
Commitment & Credit: Internship opportunities are available on a full-time or part-time basis. School credit is possible for all internships if arranged and approved by the intern’s respective college or university. Candidates may also apply for stipends, additional details listed below.
Interns are able to work on either a part-time or a full-time basis. Spring requirement 10 hour minimum per week.
This is an in person on-site opportunity, no remote or hybrid capabilities are afforded to interns at any point during your internship.
Intern Responsibilities Include:
Corresponding with and serving Massachusetts constituents who bring their concerns to the Senator’s office.
Front desk operations, including fielding constituent calls, logging opinions for the Senator, and directing casework calls to in-office staff.
Assisting with casework, communicating with federal agencies regarding issues facing constituents and the Commonwealth at large.
Collaborating with office staff and fellow interns in designated pods that specialize in distinct areas of Constituent Services.
Sorting mail sent to the office from constituents, ranging from scheduling requests, opinion and advocacy mail, and casework.
Drafting and writing inquiries, letters of support, greetings and congratulatory citations.
Assisting with event planning and visits by the Senator throughout the Commonwealth.
BOSTON COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIP
Senator Markey’s Boston office is currently accepting applications for communications interns for Spring 2025. Applications are due by Monday, November 18, 2025, at 11:59pm EST.
Qualifications: The Boston internship program is directed toward current and recent undergraduate students. All applicants must be proactive hard-workers who have a demonstrated interest in press and/or digital media—with excellent writing, editing, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Digital skills (i.e Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Canva, video editing, social media, etc.) are a plus. Backgrounds in political science, journalism, communications, film, graphic design, media studies, and liberal arts are desirable but not required. Massachusetts ties are strongly preferred.
Commitment & Credit: Internship opportunities are available on a part-time basis. School credit is possible for all internships if arranged and approved by the intern’s respective college or university. Candidates may also apply for stipends, details listed below.
All interns are required to commit to working a minimum of 10 hours a week.
Spring session: January 15 to May 9, 2025
Responsibilities Include:
· Compiling daily press clips
· Maintaining and updating press lists
· Monitoring national, state, and local media
· Drafting and editing written materials, including press releases, op-eds, newsletters, and social copy
· Creating engaging social media content, graphics, and videos for the digital team
· Supporting the communications team with press conferences and live events
In addition to the responsibilities above, communications interns may be tasked with:
· Corresponding with and serving Massachusetts constituents, such as answering phones, and organizing incoming messages
· Assisting with other administrative and legislative projects as necessary
SPRINGFIELD CONGRESSIONAL INTERNSHIP
Senator Markey’s Springfield, MA Office is currently accepting applications for the spring 2024 internship program. Applications are due by Monday, November 18, 2025 at 11:59PM EST.
Applications are viewed on a rolling basis. Preference is given to applicants that apply early.
Spring session: Jan 15, 2025 to May 9, 2025
Qualifications: Our internship program is geared towards current undergraduate, recent undergraduate, graduate, and associate’s degree. Assisting with casework, communicating with federal agencies regarding issues facing constituents and the Commonwealth at large.
Stipends:
Stipends are available to students who could not otherwise afford to live or work in Massachusetts. Interns will receive a stipend at the pre-tax rate of $15 an hour.
In order to be eligible, please submit a statement describing how this stipend will allow you to pursue your educational goals and professional aspirations through this internship experience. This essay is reviewed separately from the internship application.
Stipend Eligibility:
Pursuant to federal law, an individual may not be hired for a paid Senate position in the continental United States unless the individual meets one of the following criteria:
Is a United States citizen
Is lawfully admitted for permanent residence and is seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b (a) (3) (B);
Is (I) admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157 or is granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. § 1158 and (ii) has filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; or
Owes allegiance to the United States.
(Note: To meet this requirement, an individual must be (1) a non-citizen U.S. national born in or having ties to American Samoa or Swains Island (as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1408), or (2) a non-citizen U.S. national pursuant to section 302 of Public Law 94-241 (relating to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands).
Participation in E-Verify Program: The law requires this Office to comply with the E-Verify program established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA). If you are selected to receive by our office for a stipend or will receive other remuneration from the Office, the Office will verify with the DHS and SSA that you are eligible for employment in the United States.
