Senator Markey’s Washington DC office is currently accepting applications for legislative, communications, and scheduling/operations interns for Summer 2024. Applications are due by March 10, 2024 at 11:59PM EST. 

Qualifications: Our internship program is directed towards current and recent undergraduate or associate’s degree students. All applicants should be responsible self-starters who possess strong writing, research, and interpersonal skills. Legislative Interns should have interests in policy and government, the ability to work both independently and well with others, and strong task delegation and completion skills. Communications Interns must be proactive hard-workers—who have a demonstrated interest in press and/or digital media—with excellent writing, editing, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Ideal candidates can pay close attention to detail, multitask, and be a team player. Digital skills (i.e Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Canva, video editing, social media, etc.) are a plus. The DC internship program is directed toward current and recent undergraduate students. Scheduling/Operations Interns must be proactive hard-workers with excellent time management skills and the ability to work under pressure. The DC internship program is directed toward current and recent undergraduate students. 

Backgrounds in political science, English, history, international relations, environmental studies, liberal arts, communications, journalism, film, graphic design, media studies, public administration, business, and management are desirable but not required. Massachusetts ties are strongly preferred.

Commitment & Credit: Internship opportunities are available on a full-time or part-time basis. School credit is possible for all internships if arranged and approved by the intern’s respective college or university. Candidates may also apply for stipends, details listed below.

All interns are required to commit to working a minimum of 20 hours a week.  

Legislative Intern Responsibilities:

• Corresponding with and serving Massachusetts constituents through tasks such as answering phones, responding to inquiries, and giving tours of the U.S. Capitol
• Assisting the Senator and staff in all areas of office operation
• Researching legislative initiatives and drafting replies to constituent inquiries
• Attending Senate committee hearings and briefings
• Assisting with a variety of legislative or communications projects, including compiling press clips

Communications/Digital Intern Responsibilities:

• Compiling daily press clips
• Maintaining and updating press lists
• Monitoring national, state, and local media
• Drafting and editing written materials, including press releases, op-eds, newsletters, and social copy
• Creating engaging social media content, graphics, and videos for the digital team
• Supporting the communications team with press conferences and live events

In addition to the responsibilities above, Communications/Digital interns may be tasked with:

• Corresponding with and serving Massachusetts constituents, such as answering phones, giving Capitol tours, and organizing incoming messages
• Attending Senate committee hearings and briefings
• Assisting with other administrative and legislative projects as necessary

Scheduling/Operations Intern Responsibilities:

• Working with the Director of Scheduling to track incoming scheduling inquiries
• Compiling data to organize information, and maintaining scheduling records

In addition to the responsibilities above, Scheduling/Operations interns may be tasked with

• Corresponding with and serving Massachusetts constituents, such as answering phones, giving Capitol tours, and organizing incoming messages
• Attending Senate committee hearings and briefings
• Assisting with other administrative and legislative projects as necessary

Stipends:

Stipends are available on a limited basis to students who could not otherwise afford to live or work in Washington DC. Interns will receive a stipend at the pre-tax rate of $15 an hour.
