An internship with the Office of U.S. Senator Brian Schatz offers students a deeper understanding of public service, community concerns and priorities, and the legislative process.  Competitive candidates are strong writers with a positive attitude and excellent communication skills.  Successful interns are good team members, adaptable, and open to feedback.  While a demonstrated interest in public service is appreciated, we also value subject matter expertise and experiential learning.

Internships are available in both the Washington, D.C. and Hawai‘i offices year round.  Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least one year of college at the time of their internship, and preference is given to students toward the end of their educational programs.  Graduate and law school internships are available in the Washington, D.C. office only.  Hawai‘i residents are given priority for all internship positions.

Students are encouraged to apply early as there are a limited number of positions in each office and applications will be reviewed as received.  No accommodations can be made once all positions are filled.  We do offer part-time internships during the fall and spring semesters but give preference to students who are able to make a significant time commitment to the internship.  Only full-time positions are available for the summer.  While the timeline can vary, all summer internship offers are generally made in early April.  Regardless of potential start date, students interested in summer positions should submit their applications by early March.

Undergraduate, graduate, and law school internships with Senator Schatz’s office are paid unless in conflict with degree requirements, outside stipends, U.S. Senate employment criteria, or other unique circumstances.  We are willing to work with selected interns to fulfill the requirements of most outside educational programs.  Interested students who believe financial considerations may prohibit them from pursuing this internship opportunity are encouraged to contact internship@schatz.senate.gov.
