First Time Here?

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for beginning the application process for a Congressional Nomination to one of the United States Service Academies. It is my honor to be a nominating authority for the state of Tennessee, and I am proud to have the opportunity to work with the young men and women who want to serve our country.

The last day to submit your application is Friday, October 11th, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Candidates for consideration must submit the following:

  • Online Nomination Application
  • Three to five (3-5) Letters of Recommendation
    • Letters of Recommendation may NOT be written by family members, regardless of their affiliation with the armed services or otherwise
    • At least one letter must come from an academic source (i.e. a teacher or school administrator)
    • At least one letter must come from a non-academic source (i.e. a coach, employer, religious leader)
  • One (1) essay that accurately and thoughtfully answers the prompt, "Why do you want to attend a Service Academy?"
  • Official High School Transcript (and College, if applicable)
  • SAT and/or ACT Scores (can be super scored)
    • Please submit an official record of your test score to Senator Hagerty's institution code:
      • SAT: 1987
      • ACT: 7183
  • A Headshot*
    • *Headshots are not required, however, they are highly encouraged
  • Résumé*
    • Résumés are not required, however, they are highly encouraged

In order to be eligible for an Academy Nomination, each candidate must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age, but not yet 23 by July 1st of the year he or she is admitted to the Service Academy;
    • For Merchant Marine Academy, the upper age limit is 25.
  • Be a United States Citizen at the time he or she enters the Service Academy, and a legal resident of Tennessee;
    • College and Prep School students apply where parents legally reside
  • Be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents;
  • Meet the minimum requirements of the Academy to which he or she is applying. Candidates who do not meet the school’s minimum requirements will not receive an interview for the Service Academy.

Please be sure that you have opened an application file with each Academy to which you are applying, and that you have completed any of their additional requirements. Remember that graduating from a Service Academy obligates you to serve at least five years of active duty.

Keep in mind that it is YOUR responsibility (not your parents' or teachers') to ensure your entire application is completed and submitted in a timely manner.

The competition for congressional nominations is high, so I also encourage you to apply for a nomination from your other nominating sources: Senator Marsha Blackburn, your U.S. Congressman, and the Vice President.

If you have any questions about the application or any aspect of the nomination process, please contact our Service Academy Coordinator, Ms. Jill McElroy, at Service_Academy@hagerty.senate.gov.

Once again, thank you for your aspiration to serve our great country.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty
