First Time Here?

The 2021 Washington, DC fall program is tentative.  Please be advised that the program could be cancelled, or dates could be changed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2021 Burlington, Vermont fall program will be in person barring ongoing COVID-19 related restrictions.

Senator Leahy offers paid internships in his Washington, DC and Burlington, Vermont offices during the spring, summer and fall for college students and recent graduates. The United States Senate is an equal opportunity employer and individuals of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Full and part time positions are available. Preference is given to Vermonters who are in their junior or senior year of college.

Since the program’s inception in 1975, Senator Leahy has fostered a unique experience for young Vermonters looking to learn more about the legislative process in Washington. Interns become an integral part of the office, working closely with staff on a variety of legislative and constituent-focused issues, giving them a front row seat to how Vermonters are represented at the federal level.

Application Directions:

Please create an account if you don't already have one, then log in and fill out the application questionnaire and complete the checklist. You will need to upload PDF files of your resume, transcript, and cover letter. You will also need to submit two letters of recommendation by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Due to an appropriations provision that prohibits federal money from being used to pay non-citizens as federal employees, we are only able to hire United States citizens for our internship program at this time.
