Vermont students interested in attending the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, or Merchant Marine Academy must secure a nomination from an authorized source. Senator Welch receives numerous requests every year from young Vermonters seeking a congressional nomination to attend a U.S. service academy. He carefully considers applications from Vermont residents and the children of Vermont residents. Students from other states are encouraged to seek nominations from their respective congressional representatives.
The nomination process is highly competitive, and we strongly encourage you to apply for a nomination from Senator Sanders and Representative Balint as well. Additionally, there are alternative sources through which you may qualify for nomination:
- President Donald J. Trump nominates children of career military personnel, deceased or disabled veterans, military or civilian personnel in missing status, and Medal of Honor recipients.
- Vice President J.D. Vance nominates five individuals from across the United States per year.
- The Secretary of the Army, Navy, or Air Force nominates members of the regular military, reserve components, and participants in the ROTC program.
