In order for Vermont students to apply to the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, or Merchant Marine Academies, they must first secure a nomination from a Member of Congress. Senator Welch receives numerous requests every year from young Vermonters aspiring to attend a military service academy. He carefully considers applications from Vermont residents and the children of Vermont residents. Students from other states are encouraged to seek political nominations from their respective Congressional representatives.

The nomination process is highly competitive, and we strongly encourage you to apply for a nomination from Senator Welch, as well as Senator Sanders and Representative Balint. They have the authority to nominate qualified applicants to any of the four service academies. Additionally, if you're interested in attending the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, or Merchant Marine Academies, there are alternative sources through which you may qualify for nomination:

  1. President Joseph R. Biden nominates children of career military personnel, deceased or disabled veterans, military or civilian personnel in missing status, and Medal of Honor recipients.
  2. Vice President Kamala D. Harris nominates five individuals from across the United States per year.
  3. The Secretary of the Army, Navy, or Air Force nominates members of the regular military, reserve components, and participants in the ROTC program.

Contact the Burlington office at 802-863-2525 if you have any questions or if our office can be of assistance in any way during this process. You may also send an email to Academy_Nominations@Welch.senate.gov.
