An internship in Senator Ben Cardin's Capitol Hill office provides an exciting educational and behind-the-scenes look at the federal legislative process. Interns here will provide basic assistance to the staff by sorting office mail, researching and summarizing proposed legislation, attending hearings and briefings, and drafting constituent correspondence.

The Baltimore office handles casework, assisting constituents in interactions with federal agencies.  Interns in the state office will help with administrative tasks, sorting mail, and helping caseworkers and our field staff.

Applicants generally must be undergraduate or graduate-level students.  The Baltimore office occasionally accepts high school seniors for their internship program.  Those students must be participating in a school-sponsored work/study program, a credited course or senior work project.

Fall and spring interns are required to work at least 16 hours per week.  The Senate is generally in session on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, so those are the best days for prospective interns interested in Capitol Hill internships.

Marylanders or students attending school in Maryland will be given preference.

The selection process is highly competitive. Prospective interns wishing to apply to the program must submit an internship application, a current resume, two letters of recommendation (at least one from a teacher or professor), and two writing samples.

The application deadline for the fall semester is July 26, but we recommend that you submit your completed application as soon as possible.
